1) Department of Justice Rap Sheet
For a complete list of all of your arrests and convictions in every county in California, you must obtain a RAP sheet from the California Department of Justice (DOJ).
This process will take about 4-6 weeks. The DOJ charges $25 for a copy of your Rap Sheet (though you can apply to get this fee waived; see below). In addition, fingerprinting at the Live Scan Operator will cost approximately $20-$25. |

2) Criminal History Record from Sheriff
If cases are all local here in San Diego County and no older than 7-10 years ago, you may be able to obtain a local Criminal History Record from the Sheriff’s office.

How to:
Bring a government-issued photo ID (ID card, driver’s license, passport, military ID) to the Sheriff’s office located at 9621 Ridgehaven Court, San Diego, CA 92123.

Register for the clinic. Call (619) 940-7577 and leave a voicemail message with your name and phone number (please repeat it twice slowly). Someone will call you back to confirm that you are registered.

If you owe, or might owe, fines, fees, or restitution on your criminal case(s), call the San Diego County Office of Revenue and Recovery at (619) 515-6200 and ask “Do I owe any outstanding fines, fees or restitution on any of my San Diego County criminal cases?”
You will need to provide the clerk with your criminal case number(s).

Getting your background check:
If you were denied a job or housing because of your background, you should be given a copy of your background check. You can get a copy of your background check from (1) the employer/landlord that denied your application; or (2) the background check company.
